Lake George Leaf Peeping Guide

Autumn in Lake George

fall in lake george

Lake George and the surrounding Adirondack Mountains are renowned for their bold and beautiful fall foliage. If you want to check out the colors this fall, Bayside Resort has your guide to the best leaf peeping excursions in the area.

Fall Hikes

In addition to 100 acres of hiking trails on the resort property, Bayside Resort is less than five minutes from Pilot Knob trailhead and 10 minutes from the more difficult Buck Mountain hike – both offering stunning views of the fall colors. A little further north of the resort, Shelving Rock Falls and Sleeping Beauty Mountain provide equally breathtaking fall photo ops.

Tree-Lined Bike Trails

Just a 10-minute drive from Bayside Resort, the Warren County Bikeway pops with fall colors in late September and October. The 9.4-mile paved path starts at Battlefield Park on Beach Road in Lake George and winds through the woods to downtown Glens Falls. You can also explore the fall foliage on a railbike tour with the Revolution Rail Co. The Hadley Station run takes you through the pine canopy and across a spectacular 90′ high bridge that overlooks the confluence of the Hudson and Sacandaga Rivers.

Boat Cruises

For a panoramic view of the fall-colored mountains, climb aboard one of the boat cruises on Lake George. Lake George Waterfront Cruises offers excursions through September and the Lake George Steamboat Company features a variety of brunch, lunch, dinner and sightseeing cruises through the last weekend in October. Enjoy spectacular leaf peeping views you simply won’t find anywhere else in the Adirondacks.

Hot Air Balloon Rides

Quite possibly one of the most unique and romantic ways to view the fall foliage, a hot air balloon ride is definitely the most awe-inspiring. Several local pilots offer fall leaf peeping flights with views of the Adirondack Mountains, Lake George and the spectacular fall foliage. Book a private or group ride with Sunkiss Ballooning in Queensbury NY or Ballooning Adventures in Glens Falls.

Ziplining

There’s nothing quite like a zip line adventure to fully immerse yourself in the colors of fall. Imagine flying through the forest canopy bright with the season’s reds, oranges and yellows. Adirondack Extreme offers ziplining in Bolton Landing on weekends and select weekdays from September 5 through November 11, and Lake Luzerne’s Adirondack Adventure Center is open on weekends through Columbus Day.

Whitewater Rafting

For those who prefer their leaf peeping with a side of adrenaline, whitewater rafting makes for a fun fall adventure. The foliage is stunning along the Adirondack rivers this time of year, and the waters are still holding onto the last bit of summer’s warmth. Charge down the wild waters of the Sacandaga River with the Sacandaga Outdoor Center in Hadley NY or the Adirondack Adventure Center in Lake Luzerne. Both companies offer rafting tours through then end of September.
